European first for wildlife documentary course

Budding David Attenboroughs will soon get the chance to study on Europe's first wildlife documentary course at Salford University.

The postgraduate course includes teaching from world renowned wildlife documentary maker, Paul Reddish, producer of the BBC's Attenborough in Paradise series. Students will work alongside existing professionals in zoos and ecology centres, as well as learning about the theory of wildlife documentary making.

Erik Knudsen, Professor of Film Practice at Salford University, said: "This course is unique in Europe and will give students hands-on experience of filming on location throughout the UK. We are pleased to have gained the backing of some highly respected names in the industry."

The course is targeted at students from either science or media backgrounds with a passion for wildlife. The curriculum will include training in specialist long lens camera skills along with wildlife research and conservation law.

Salford University already offers popular undergraduate courses in Documentary Production and in Wildlife Conservation. The new Wildlife Documentary MA is a direct response to students' requests to gain further knowledge in the highly skilled profession of wildlife documentary production.

John Mundy, Head of Music, Media & Performance at Salford said: "Given the UK's pre-eminence in wildlife film and television production, we were surprised that there was so little opportunity for students to train in this area.

"Our course will give students the best chance to learn from both science and media experts, with teaching expertise across two schools - Media, Music & Performance and Environment & Life Sciences."
