Just a quick heads up. Go Pro announced the HD Hero 2 yesterday. I've used the old Go Pro HD on a few shoots and they've been brilliant every time. The new one apparently has a better lens, adjustable field of view, better low light performance, higher stills resolution and wifi video streaming option amongst other improvements. Can't wait to try one out!

Yup they're available now it seems. No naked ones yet, just packages so I guess I'll have to wait to upgrade my kit. I have a couple with most accessories. Just started playing with the 3D which is cool. My only gripe is the mounting can be really wobbly. I often ave to tape and lamp things to get cameras stable in even simple situations. I must add too, we've used the contour HD GPS on shoots too and they are much better for helmet mounting and POV stuff as they are a lot lower profile. Especially noticeable if doing presenter/ in vision stuff where the go pro is a bit too obvious.

I've not used the Contour - worth knowing about.
One thing I wish Go Pro would sort out is their underwater housing. Sure it goes underwater but the image is blurry. If you want to use one underwater you have to add a flat bit of glass in front of the housing and seal it on to create an additional airspace for light to pass through before it hits the dome port. Some pre-made versions are available from other manufacturers or you can do it yourself. Supposedly Go Pro are working on a fix themselves but they've been saying that for ages. Still an amazing bit of kit though. I've seen some 3D shot with them and it was really impressive.

Yah I tried some underwater whilst snorkeling in Fiji. It really didn't cope well at all. Once more than 6 inches below surface images got blurry and also very very grainy due to low light I guess. Hopefully the HD2 will solve the exposure / ISO issue a bit.
I didn't know about the lens fix. Useful tip. Will have to check more into that. I wonder if we shouldn't start a new section for GoPro - I can see it expanding as a topic. |

I'm a VIO-POV HD fan myself as i prefer to have the recorder and camera head separate. These bad boys are water proof to 5m straight out of the box and they come with a really cool remote. All the usual 1080, 720, 24p,25p,60p options and fits your standard grip unlike the rubbish that GoPro supply.

That is pretty cool looking.
Their website is here http://www.vio-pov.com/products-all/pov-hd.html
Have you shot with them much? I get different reactions from productions about all these various minicams. Had any feedback on these? I know some are skeptical about broadcasting GoPro footage unless it is perfect, and even more so the Contour HD stuff. |

yep, I've used them a fair bit. So far no problems with the likes of Disco' and Nat Geo. I used the old SD version on lost land of the volcano and on some climbing shoots for coast and the BBC seemed happy enough. I don't think anyone will except any of these cameras as being "true full hd" and they usually have to be part of a productions SD allowance. The fact that they are a fraction of the cost of the Panasonic ans Sony mini cams means we can stick them places we would never put their more expensive cousins.

Just heard from GoPro that no planned release of a naked version of the GoPro HD2 yet so you can only upgrade by buying a whole new package.

the wireless options for the new GoPro are the most exciting prospect for me. The engineers downstairs at NG had custom built some GoPros w/ wireless viewing and recording options. Was really useful to be able to actively control as remote trail cams, but it turned the tiny camera into something really bulky.
The idea of having like 6 GoPros stashed at a kill and remotely controlling which are recording with an iPad sounds pretty exciting. Andy Casagrande is in tight with the GoPro people. Trying to get him on the forums and maybe he can tell us more. |

Have just been filming with the Contour HD and annoyingly the WiFi monitoring only works while the camera is in standby mode, and only gives a frame every 5 sec! Is the Go Pro the same? Not ideal really - it would be handy to be able to monitor te shot as it records. As it stands it's just a glorified framing tool.
