Panasonic HPX3700 fuse blow problems

Posted by: Andy Shillabeer at 07:14 on 22 Apr 2011

Just got back from a shoot using the new Panasonic HPX3700. Experienced a strange situation where the camera completely died. Our replacement camera, also a 3700 also suffered the same fate. Both failed after being turned off following working fine for several hours. Turned out a slow blow fuse had blown possibly due to a grounding problem with one of the accessories connected to the cameras. Apparently this is the result of new circuit protection not found in earlier Panasonic HD cameras. We were using remote triggers, HD down converters and video senders. A replacement board that costs $250 repairs the fault but may not prevent future fails. Would be interested to hear of any other similar incidents.

HI Andy, we had something similar on a 2700. We were using the DC out on the 4pin hirose on the back to power a LCD. There was a short and the main camera fuse blew - no life whatsoever. There are timed fuses in the camera but that DCout Hirose is not on one of them. Had to go back to Topteks in London for a fuse change out. Seems crazy to me that such an easy fault to create is not either on a timed fuse or on the cameras breaker....but what do I know.

This has been a problem with Sony cameras for some years, most of the hire comp's upgrade the fuses as a matter of course. Didn't know that the Panasonic's where prone also, thanks for the heads up.
